What is Tramme Tapestry?
Tramme tapestries feature a design that is pre-stitched onto the canvas using horizontal stitches of varying lengths and colours. The stitcher then simply stitches over the horizontal lines with the provided threads. The tramme stitches act as a completely accurate guide as to the colour and number of stitches required.

The main advantage of tramme tapestries is that the precise locations of all colours are clearly shown by the tramming so there is never any doubt about where one colour finishes and another begins. Tramme tapestries are also harder-wearing as there is an additional layer of wool under the design part of canvas. The stitcher can even tramme the background areas as well. For these reasons, tramme tapestries are very suitable for furniture or other applications where hard wear is expected. Because each tramme tapestry is individually stitched, they are usually more expensive than conventional printed canvases.

Some sophisticated tramme canvas have small areas worked in "petit point". These offer greater detail for delicate areas (like faces).

Our tramme tapestries come with enough wool to stitch the trammed areas of the canvas. You may need to purchase additional wool to complete any untrammed areas of the background.
